What you are looking at
The first photo looks down the slope above the fenced lawn. These are laminated architectural shingles, two layers bonded together, so the roof reads as a random mix of light and dark gray patches instead of straight rows. Two black vent pipes stand up through the field, one tall and one slim.
From the front yard the roof shows its two sections. The left one slopes down to a hipped end, and where the right one meets it, a short gable wall faced in red-brown boards stands above the lower roof. Tall trees rise behind the house.
Along the main ridge, a ridge vent sits under the cap shingles, and its slotted black edges show on both sides of the cap. Warm attic air rises and leaves through those slots, which helps limit heat build-up in the attic through a Florida summer.
The fourth photo stands on the lower roof at that gable wall. The shingles run right up to the base of the weathered red-brown boards, and the higher roof above is finished at its edge with black metal trim.
The vent pipes got new black boots, and the close photo shows one with a screened cap on top. Photos Brehm took during the install show the base of a boot set in black roof sealant over the underlayment before the shingles were laid around it. Photos Brehm took before the job show silver metal vent pipes on the old red-brown roof.
Photos Brehm took during the tear-off show a deck of OSB, the board made of pressed wood chips, with sections replaced by new plywood sheets. The seams were covered with deck tape, then a dark gray synthetic underlayment went down, held with bright green plastic cap nails, with new black drip edge along the eaves.
