Shingle Roof Replacement in Lady Lake, FL, November 2024

A single-story home with gray-blue lap siding in Lady Lake, under a long shingle roof with one ridge running the length of the house. In November 2024 the old reddish-brown shingles came off and the roof was redone in gray architectural shingles with a ridge vent along the peak.

What you are looking at

The first photo looks down the length of the roof along the ridge. The shingles fall away on both sides of the peak, with a black plumbing vent pipe on the right-hand slope. Beyond the roof are the neighbor's lighter brown shingle roof and a white garage with red trim, a reminder of how close the homes sit on this street.

The new shingles are an architectural style: two layers bonded together so each tab has a thicker, shadowed look instead of the flat strips of a three-tab shingle. Up close the color is a mix of charcoal patches beside lighter gray, with fine white and black granules. Across the whole roof that mix evens out to a medium gray.

Along the peak is a ridge vent, a long low vent that lets warm air escape from under the roof deck at the very top. It is covered with shingle ridge caps, and the vent edge shows as a thin black line on each side of the cap. Under strong Florida sun, venting at the peak helps limit heat build-up below the roof.

Two more photos look at the edges and the roof plane. One shows a plumbing vent pipe and a low hooded vent set into the new shingles. The other looks down at a corner where the shingle edge meets white metal trim, with the lawn and a sidewalk below.

Photos Brehm took during the tear-off show the old reddish-brown shingles coming off down to the plywood deck, onto tarps spread over the lawn and into a dump trailer. In a few spots near the eaves, sections of decking were cut out, which opened the roof to the rafters and pink insulation, and new plywood was fitted in. Gray synthetic underlayment, the water-resistant layer between the deck and the shingles, went down next, with a tape measure laid across it in several frames, before shingle bundles were set out on the roof.

The house also has attached low-slope metal roof sections beside the shingle roof. They show up in photos Brehm took on the job, but none of those photos shows them being replaced, so this page sticks to the shingle roof.
