What you are looking at

The first photo looks across the back of the house from up on the roof. One of the raised gables sits at the center of the frame, covered in white lap siding with navy rake trim, and the screen enclosure and a row of palms stand behind it. A ridge vent runs along the ridge in the foreground, and a low box vent and a small vent pipe sit on the plane beside it.

Toward the front of the lot the roof ends in a hip, where the end of the roof slopes down as well instead of ending in a flat gable wall. The ridge vent runs along the top under capped ridge shingles, and where the vent stops, the same cap shingles carry on down the hip. A ridge vent is a long, low vent along the peak that lets warm attic air out.

Photos Brehm took during the tear-off show the old roof stripped to the deck and new plywood fitted where sections of the old decking were cut out. Synthetic underlayment printed with the Brehm logo went down next, held with plastic cap nails, and dark drip edge metal was run along the roof edges. The bundle wrappers in those photos read Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration.

The gable photo shows where a lower roof plane meets the siding. Flashing, the metal that covers the joint between a roof and a wall, runs along the base of the siding, and a black hooded vent sits a few courses below it. The close view of the ridge shows the cap shingles bent over the ridge vent, with a black vent pipe on the plane beyond.

In the last photo two roof planes meet in a valley, the shallow trough where water from both sides runs down, with another hooded vent at the bottom of the frame. The shingle itself is a charcoal gray blend with lighter gray patches scattered through each course, which gives the roof its random, patchwork look.

Outside, the lot is open lawn with palm trees and wood board fences. The ridge and box vents give attic air a way out, which helps limit heat build-up under a dark roof through a Gainesville summer.
