Shingle Roof Replacement in Alachua, FL, July 2025

This Alachua property has two roofs under the oaks: a one-story brick home and a detached garage with a wood plank front. In July 2025 the old dark shingles came off both, and Owens Corning Duration shingles went on, in the color Driftwood according to the leftover bundle wrapper on site.

What you are looking at

The drone frame looks down one corner of the house, where a hip ridge runs from the peak to the eave. A hip is the sloped ridge where two roof planes meet at an outside corner, and here it is capped with thicker ridge shingles. From above, the field shingles read as a mix of brown, gray and charcoal tabs, with the brick wall and clipped hedges just below the edge.

Photos Brehm took on the old roof in May show dark shingles with pale streaks down the slopes. Photos Brehm took during the tear-off show the old deck opened up beside the chimney and pale new plywood sheets cut in among the older, darker decking. The whole deck then went under white synthetic underlayment, a sheet that lies beneath the shingles as a backup layer, and a dark metal drip edge was nailed along the eaves.

In sun the shingles show more color: tan, taupe and gray granules in a staggered pattern. The close photo of the main ridge shows a ridge vent under the cap shingles, a black vent strip with small openings along each side. A ridge vent lets warm attic air out along the peak, which helps limit heat build-up under the roof during an Alachua summer.

Further along, the plumbing vents now wear black pipe boots, the sealed collars that close the gap where a pipe passes through the roof. Photos Brehm took on the last day show the electrical service mast with its own flashing boot, nailed into the new courses. The brick chimney has metal flashing wrapped around its base. Past it, a low white flat section runs along one side of the house; these photos do not show work on that section.

The detached garage got the same shingles on its small hip roof, with a short ridge vent at the top and a dark drip edge above white fascia. Its front is rough wood plank around a white two-car door, and the side wall is painted blue-gray block. From up on the main roof, the view opens onto wide mowed lawn, young trees and a big oak hung with Spanish moss, the kind of tree that drops leaves and twigs onto a roof.
