What you are looking at
The first photo is a close look at the garage wing, where the new shingles fill the slope from the gutter line up to the ridge. Two long, low metal vents sit partway up, with a small pipe vent between them. From the front corner, the roof steps down over the porch, and a gable with three small windows rises above it.
These are architectural shingles, with thick and thin tabs that give the surface a layered, shadowed look. The color is a gray blend. In full sun it reads as a soft gray with a little warmth, and under the gray sky in the back yard photo it looks closer to taupe.
Up on the roof, the detail photos show how the planes come together. Two slopes meet in a valley, with the shingles from one side trimmed in a straight line down the center. The hip cap shingles climb to a framed chimney chase wrapped in white lap siding, and another frame looks down a capped hip with brown metal vents set into the planes beside it.
Photos Brehm took during the tear-off show the old shingles stripped to the wood deck, with blue tarps spread over the shrubs and lawn below. Several sections of the old, darker decking were cut out and replaced with new, lighter plywood sheets, some of them numbered in spray paint as they went in. White synthetic underlayment then went over the deck before the new shingles went on.
The house sits among live oaks hung with Spanish moss and tall pines, with board fencing and an open field past the garage. Out back, a screened porch runs along much of the rear wall under the new roof.
Swapping out sections of old decking helps give the new shingles a solid nailing base. Once the underlayment and shingles go on, that part of the job is out of sight.
